Car camping is a fantastic way to explore the great outdoors while enjoying the comfort and convenience of your vehicle. However, keeping your food cold can be a challenge, especially in the warmer months. Whether you’re using a traditional esky (cooler) with ice or a modern 12V camping fridge, here are some tips and tricks to ensure your food stays fresh and safe.
The Esky and Ice Method
The esky, also known as a cooler, is a staple for many campers. Using ice to keep your food cold is a tried-and-true method that’s both effective and affordable. Here’s how to make the most out of your esky and ice setup:
Choosing the Right Esky
- Size Matters: Select an esky that suits the length of your trip and the amount of food you need to store. Larger eskies can hold more ice and maintain lower temperatures for longer periods.
- Insulation Quality: Look for an esky with thick, high-quality insulation to keep the cold in and the heat out.
Preparing Your Esky
- Pre-Chill Your Esky: Before you pack your food, cool down your esky by filling it with ice a few hours before you leave. This helps lower the internal temperature and makes the ice last longer.
- Use Block Ice: Block ice melts more slowly than ice cubes. You can also freeze water bottles to act as ice blocks and provide additional drinking water as they melt.
- Layering: Pack your esky in layers, starting with a layer of ice at the bottom. Place the most perishable items, like meat and dairy, directly on the ice, followed by less perishable items.
Packing Tips
- Organize: Pack your esky with meal plans in mind. Keep items you’ll need first on top to avoid unnecessary rummaging, which can let warm air in.
- Separate Items: Use containers or plastic bags to keep food items organized and prevent cross-contamination, especially if you’re storing raw meat.
- Fill the Gaps: Minimize empty space inside your esky by filling gaps with ice or frozen items. Air pockets can accelerate ice melting.
Maintaining Cold Temperatures
- Keep It Closed: Only open your esky when necessary. Frequent opening can cause the internal temperature to rise.
- Shade and Elevation: Keep your esky out of direct sunlight and off hot surfaces. Placing it in the shade or covering it with a reflective blanket can help maintain a lower temperature.
- Drain Water: Regularly drain melted ice water from your esky, as it can warm up the remaining ice.
